Supporting sentences

In Lesson Two you got familiar with the paragraph format as well as the structure of a topic sentence. Now, two other components of a paragraph, namely supporting sentences and concluding sentence are introduced.

Supporting sentences come after the topic sentence. These sentences can:

explain the idea in the topic sentence

give reasons

give examples

tell a short story

A. Read the following paragraphs. Cross out any sentences that do not support the topic sentences.

Ants are strange insects. Like all insects, they have six legs. Each leg has three joints. Yesterday, I saw an ant. The legs of ants are very strong, which help ants run very quickly. I can run quickly too. If a man could run as fast for his size as an ant can, he could run as fast as a racehorse.

The new century has brought big changes in communication. Cell phones are small enough to carry in your pocket. Students should not use cell phones in schools. Videophones let you see the person you are talking to on the phone. But some people do not have such phones. Tiny hand-size computers know your favorite subjects. The Internet is everywhere

The concluding sentence

The last sentence in a paragraph is often a concluding sentence. This sentence repeats the idea of the topic sentence.

Remember: Not all paragraphs have concluding sentences

B. Read the following paragraphs. Which one has a concluding sentence?

Horses are farm animals. They are usually black, grey, white and brown in color. They carry people and goods from one place to another. They have long legs, which are very strong. They can easily run long distances. Horses usually move in herds. They live in a stable. They are very useful farm animals.

Energy is important. Without it, we would have a harder time because most of our activities like cooking a dinner, heating a house, lighting a street, keeping a hospital open, running a factory all require energy. It is thus at the heart of everybody’s life.

Elephant is the largest animal to walk the Earth. An elephant can carry a load of 1200 pounds. They eat 300 pounds of food a day. An elephant baby can weigh 200 pounds at birth. Elephants can live up to 70 years.

C. Unscramble the following sentences. Then write them in correct order to form a paragraph.

1) In order of distance from the Sun, the planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

2) The Solar System consists of the Sun, Moon and Planets.

3) The Sun is at the centre of the Solar System and these planets revolve around it.

4) The Sun is the largest member of the Solar System.

D. Below are sentences from a paragraph in the wrong order. Decide if the sentences are topic sentences (T), supporting sentences (S), or concluding sentence (C).

a) Trees are very valuable.

b) They also cause rain.

c) They take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and fill it with oxygen.

d) In short, the trees are the best friends of man.

e) They supply us with many necessary things of everyday life.

E. Now you are going to write a paragraph about ‘Learning a New Language’. Follow the steps:

Try to write a good topic sentence.

Generate at least three supporting sentences.

Write a good concluding sentence.

Now organize them to form a paragraph.

Sport or Exercise has many physical and mental benefits it increases brain’s function. sport relieves stress and reduces the risk of heart diseases. It also helps you sleep better. Finally, we can say that exercise can help you live a healthy life..

Iran is a country in southwest Asia and It is in middle east. Iran is in the north with Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, in the east with Afghanistan and Pakistan and in the west with Turkey and Iraq.

It is also confined from the north to the Caspian Sea and from the south to the Persian Gulf. Tehran is the capital of Iran. Iran is a big country.

جملات کمکی

در درس دو، شما با قالب پاراگراف و همچنین ساختار یک جمله موضوعی آشنا شدید. اکنون، دو جزء دیگر یک پاراگراف یعنی جملات کمکی و جمله پایانی معرفی شده اند. جملات کمکی بعد از جمله موضوعی می آیند. این جملات می توانند مقصود جمله موضوعی را توضیح دهند.

یک داستان کوتاه بگو

الف) پاراگراف های زیر را بخوان. هر جمله ای که جمله موضوعی را پشتیبانی نمی کند را حذف کنید.

- مورچه ها حشره های عجیبی هستند. همانند تمامی حشرات، دارای شش پا هستند. هر پا، سه مفصل دارند. دیروز، من یک مورچه دیدم. پاهای مورچه ها خیلی قوی هستند که به مورچه ها کمک می کنند تا خیلی سریع بدوند. من هم می توانم سریع بدوم. اگر یک انسان می توانست به سرعت یک مورچه هم اندازه خودش بدود، می توانست به تندی یک اسب مسابقه بدود.

- قرن جدید تغییرات بزرگی در ارتباطات به همراه آورد. تلفن های همراه به قدری کوچک هستند که در جیبتان قابل حمل هستند. دانش آموزان نباید در مدرسه ها از تلفن همراه استفاده کنند. تلفن های تصویری به شما اجازه می دهد تا شخصی را که دارید تلفنی با او صحبت می کنید، ببینید اما برخی از مردم اینجور تلفن ها را ندارند. رایانه های دستی کوچک موضوع های مورد علاقه شما را می دانند. اینترنت همه جا هست.

جمله پایانی

اغلب، آخرین جمله یک پاراگراف، جمله پایانی است. این جمله، مقصود جمله موضوعی را  بازگو می کنند.

به یاد داشته باشید: همه پاراگراف ها، جملات پایانی ندارند.

ب) پاراگراف های زیر را بخوانید. کدام یک دارای جمله پایانی است؟

- اسب ها حیوانات مزرعه هستند. آن ها معمولا در رنگ های مشکی، خاکستری، سفید و قهوه ای هستند. آن ها مردم و کالاها را از جایی به جای دیگر حمل می کنند. آن ها پاهای بلندی دارند که خیلی قوی هستند. آن ها می توانند به راحتی مسافت های طولانی را بدوند. اسب ها معمولا در گله ها حرکت می کنند. آن ها در اصطبل زندگی می کنند. آن ها حیوانات مزرعه خیلی مفیدی هستند.

- انرژی مهم است. بدون آن، ما ایام سخت تری خواهیم داشت زیرا بیشتر فعالیت هایمان مثل پختن شام، گرم کردن یک خانه، روشنایی یک خیابان و باز نگه داشتن یک بیمارستان ، اداره کردن یک کارخانه، همگی به انرژی نیاز دارند. این بدین معنی است که در مرکز زندگی هرکسی است.

- فیل، بزرگترین حیوان روی زمین است. یک فیل می تواند یک بار 1200 پوندی را حمل کند. آن ها در یک روز 300 پوند غذا می خورند. یک بچه فیل در هنگام تولد می تواند 200 پوند وزن داشته باشد. فیل ها می توانند تا 70 سال زندگی کنند.

پ) جمله های زیر را رمزگشایی کنید. سپس آنها را به صورت صحیح بنویسید تا یک پاراگراف تشکیل شود.

منظومه شمسی از خورشید، ماه و سیارات تشکیل شده است. خورشید بزرگترین عضو منظومه شمسی است. به ترتیب فاصله از خورشید، سیاره های عطارد، زهره، زمین، مریخ، مشتری، زحل، اورانوس، نپتون و پلوتون هستند. خورشید مرکز منظومه شمسی است و این سیارات در اطراف آن می چرخند.

ت) در زیر جملاتی از یک پاراگراف به ترتیب اشتباه آورده شده اند. تصمیم بگیرید که آیا این جملات، جملات موضوعی هستند (T)، یا جملات کمکی هستند (S) و یا جملات پایانی هستند (C).

درختان خیلی باارزش هستند. آن ها بسیاری از چیزهای ضروری زندگی روزمره را برای ما فراهم می کنند. آن ها کربن دی اکسید را از جو می گیرند و آن را با اکسیژن پر می کنند. آن ها هم چنین باعث بارندگی می شوند. خلاصه، درختان بهترین دوستان انسان هستند.

ث) اکنون شما یک پاراگراف در مورد یادگیری یک زبان جدید با استفاده از گام های زیر بنویسید.

سعی کنید تا یک جمله موضوعی خوب بنویسید.

حداقل سه جمله کمکی درست کنید.

یک جمله پایانی خوب بنویسید.

اکنون آن ها را در قالب یک پاراگراف مرتب کنید.

زمانی که شما یک زبان جدید را یاد می گیرید، شما باید چیزهایی در مورد کشورهایی که از این زبان استفاده می کنند بدانید. شما همچنین باید اطلاعاتی در مورد فرهنگ آن کشورها داشته باشید. برای یادگیری بهتر زبان جدید، شما باید مهارت های گوش کردن، حرف زدن و نوشتن خود را بهبود ببخشید.

ج) با استفاده از تصاویر زیر یک پاراگراف در مورد «ورزش» بنویسید.

ورزش فایده های جسمی و ذهنی زیادی دارد . ورزش عملکرد مغز را افزایش می دهد . منجر به کاهش می دهد . ورزش، استرس را کم می کند و خطر ابتلا به بیماری های قلبی را کاهش می دهد. همچنین به شما کمک می کند تا بهتر بخوابید و سرانجام می توانیم بگوییم ورزش می تواند به شما کمک کند تا یک زندگی سالم داشته باشید.

د) به تصویر زیر نگاه کنید و در حد یک پاراگراف آن را توصیف کنید.

ایران کشوری در جنوب غربی آسیا است و در خاورمیانه می باشد. ایران از شمال با ارمنستان، آذربایجان و ترکمنستان از شرق با افغانستان و پاکستان و از غرب با ترکیه و عراق همسایه است.

هم چنین از شمال به دریای خزر و از جنوب به خلیج فارس محدود شده است. تهران پایتخت ایران است و تهران یک کشور بزرگ است.
